HeyGen alternatives for short-form video ads (and when to stay)

By Venkata Vamsi · Updated · 9 min read

Short answer

The main HeyGen alternatives for short-form video ads are Addy (finished 9:16 ads from a website URL, about $1.35 per 20-second ad), Creatify (ad-focused AI avatars from $15 a month), Arcads (realistic actor videos at around $11 each) and MakeUGC (product-in-hand avatars). Stay with HeyGen if you need long avatar videos, translation with lip-sync or the lowest price per minute of talking avatar.

HeyGen is one of the best-known AI avatar tools, and plenty of people use it to make ads. It is also built for a much wider job: training videos, explainers, translated presentations, personal avatars. If what you actually need is a steady supply of 9:16 ads for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, a general avatar tool may not be the most direct route.

I build Addy, one of the alternatives on this list, so weigh my view accordingly. I have tried to make this useful even if you pick something else: each option below says what it is good at, what it costs according to its own pricing page as of October 2026, and when HeyGen is the better choice.

Why do people look for HeyGen alternatives for ads?

The reasons usually come down to the job being different, not HeyGen being bad:

  • The workflow starts from a script. An avatar tool is great once you know what the avatar should say. For ads, the hard part is usually the hook and the angle, and you still have to write those yourself or bring them from elsewhere.
  • Presenter look versus UGC look. Avatar videos tend to look like a person presenting to camera. Short-form ads that perform often look like a phone video in a real place: a car, a kitchen, a bathroom mirror.
  • Ads need volume and variety. Testing means many hooks, people and formats per week. A tool optimised for one polished avatar is not always the fastest way to get 20 different ones.
  • Posting is a separate step. Making the file is half the job. Getting it onto Reels, TikTok and Shorts on a schedule is the other half.

If none of those apply to you, HeyGen may already be the right tool.

HeyGen's per-ad figure is our math from its own numbers: its help center lists Avatar IV with a video look at 31 credits per minute and Avatar V at 48. We cover how every row was calculated in our honest price-per-ad comparison.

How is Addy different from HeyGen?

Addy is not an avatar editor. It is an agent that goes from your website to a posted ad:

  1. You paste a URL. Addy reads the site and writes a brand brief: product, tone, palette, audience. That takes about 3 seconds.
  2. It writes concepts, each with a hook, a script, an on-screen hook line and a caption, across 16 formats. Concepts are free.
  3. You swipe to approve. Nothing renders until you do.
  4. The approved concept is rendered as a full 9:16 scene, with a generated person in a real-looking place, the product, voice and ambient sound all in one pass. A 20-second ad is one continuous take; 45 and 60 seconds are three scenes with the same person.
  5. It schedules the ad to Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

The practical difference from HeyGen: there is no fixed avatar standing in front of a background. Every ad is a new scene, which is good for variety and less good if you want the exact same face every time. On Growth and up you can pick a recurring creator to keep one person consistent. And because scenes are generated rather than composited, you can use formats an avatar tool does not do, like claymation, baby podcast or chalkboard.

You can also run all of this from Claude or ChatGPT through our MCP server, if you would rather ask for ads in a chat than click through an editor.

How do Creatify, Arcads and MakeUGC compare?

Creatify is the closest to HeyGen in spirit, but pointed at ads: AI actors, ad templates and a separate API plan. As of October 25, 2026 its Standard plan is $15 a month for 55 credits, which its pricing page says buys 11 Aurora 15-second avatar videos. Credits expire after 2 months. If you like the avatar approach and want it tuned for ads, start here. More in Addy vs Creatify.

Arcads is built around realistic AI actors reading your script, aimed at performance marketers. It does not publish prices; a review on eesel.ai, last edited June 17, 2026, reports $110 a month for about 10 videos, so around $11 each. It is the premium option on this list. More in Addy vs Arcads.

MakeUGC positions itself around UGC-style avatars holding your product. Its pricing page lists plans from $29 a month billed yearly for 500 credits, with a $1 trial, but does not say how many credits a video costs, so we cannot give you a per-ad number. More in Addy vs MakeUGC.

Superscale is aimed at brands and agencies producing paid-ads creative at volume, with plans from $99 a month and a 5-day trial. It is a better fit for teams than for a solo founder testing their first ads. More in Addy vs Superscale.

When is HeyGen still the better choice?

In quite a few cases, honestly:

  • You need long videos. HeyGen's Creator plan allows videos up to 30 minutes. Addy caps ads at 60 seconds because that is all short-form needs.
  • You need translation with lip-sync. HeyGen lists video translation with lip-sync as a feature with its own credit rate. We do not offer that.
  • You want your own face as an avatar. HeyGen supports custom avatars, including one on the free plan. Addy generates people; it does not clone you.
  • You want the lowest price per second of talking head. By our math HeyGen's avatar video is about half our per-second price. If your ad is a presenter reading a script you already have, it is hard to beat.
  • You also make non-ad content. Training, onboarding, sales videos. One HeyGen plan may cover all of it, where Addy only does ads.

If two or more of those describe you, I would stay on HeyGen and maybe add a dedicated ad tool only for testing hooks.

What are the limits of Addy as a HeyGen alternative?

So you do not find out the hard way:

  • Generated scenes vary. Hands, product details and lip-sync are not perfect on every render; budget for some re-rolls. We wrote up the specific failure modes in what AI video models get wrong in UGC ads.
  • No on-screen text from the model. We add hook text afterwards because video models garble words, logos and app screens. That also means we do not show fake product UIs.
  • No timeline editor. You change an ad by changing the concept and re-rendering, not by dragging clips.
  • We are new. Addy launched in October 2026. HeyGen has years of product behind it. If track record matters to your team, weigh that.

The 7-day trial has no card and includes one 20-second ad, which is the fastest way to see whether the style fits your brand before comparing anything else. Our examples page shows real outputs.

Frequently asked questions

+What is the best HeyGen alternative for TikTok and Reels ads?

It depends on the job. For finished 9:16 ads from a website URL with posting included, Addy. For ad-focused AI avatars, Creatify. For realistic actor-style talking heads at a higher price, Arcads. For product-in-hand avatars, MakeUGC.

+Is there a cheaper alternative to HeyGen?

For talking-avatar video by the second, HeyGen is already one of the cheapest options we found, at roughly $0.50 to $0.78 per 20 seconds on its $29 Creator plan as of October 2026. Creatify's Standard plan starts lower at $15 a month, and Addy starts at $19 a month with ads from 99 cents.

+Can Addy use my own face like a HeyGen avatar?

No. Addy generates the person in each ad rather than cloning you. On Growth and higher plans you can choose a recurring AI creator so the same person appears across your ads.

+Does HeyGen have a free plan?

Yes. As of October 2026 HeyGen's free plan includes 3 watermarked videos a month, each up to 1 minute. Addy has a 7-day trial with one 20-second ad, no watermark and no card.

+Can I make HeyGen-style videos from ChatGPT or Claude?

With Addy, yes: connect its MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP app and ask for an ad in plain English. The assistant writes the concept, renders it and can schedule it.
