Instagram Reels ads for beginners: first campaign step by step

By Venkata Vamsi · Updated · 8 min read

Short answer

To run your first Instagram Reels ad, set up a Meta business portfolio and ad account, install the Meta pixel, create a Sales or Leads campaign with Advantage+ placements (or Reels only if you want clean data), start with about $20 to $50 a day and broad targeting, and load 3 to 5 different 9:16 videos. Leave it for 7 days, then keep the ads with the best hook rate and cost per result and make variations of them.

Reels ads run through Meta Ads Manager, the same place Facebook ads live, so the setup can look heavier than it is. A first campaign needs a handful of decisions. Most of the result comes from the videos, not the settings.

This is the setup I would give a friend running their first Reels campaign. I build Addy, which makes the videos, so I will say where that matters and where it does not.

What do you need before your first Reels ad?

  1. A Meta business portfolio and ad account at business.facebook.com, with a payment method.
  2. An Instagram professional account connected to that portfolio, so ads run under your handle.
  3. The Meta pixel or Conversions API on your site, sending at least a purchase, lead or sign-up event. Without it Meta optimises for clicks, not buyers.
  4. A landing page that matches the ad. Same offer, same words, visible without scrolling.
  5. 3 to 5 vertical videos at 1080 x 1920. Different hooks or formats, not five cuts of one clip. Specs and safe zones are in our video ad specs cheat sheet.

Which campaign settings should you choose?

SettingBeginner choiceWhy
ObjectiveSales (or Leads)Optimises for the result you want, not cheap traffic
Budget$20 to $50 a day on one ad setEnough data in a week without spreading thin
AudienceBroad: country, age, maybe genderMeta's delivery finds buyers better than narrow interests on small budgets
PlacementsAdvantage+ placements, or Reels onlyAdvantage+ is usually cheaper; Reels only gives cleaner Reels data
Conversion eventThe most frequent valuable eventMeta needs enough events to learn
Ads3 to 5 videos in the same ad setLets Meta pick and lets you compare

If you choose Advantage+ placements, your vertical video will also show in Stories and on Facebook. That is fine: 9:16 works in all of them if text stays inside the safe zone.

What kind of video works as a Reels ad?

The ads that do well look like Reels, not commercials:

  • A person talking to the phone about a problem, like a UGC talking head.
  • A hook in the first 2 seconds, said out loud and shown as text in the upper third. See Reels hook ideas.
  • Burned-in captions, because many people watch without sound.
  • 15 to 20 seconds for a first test.
  • One clear next step at the end.

Variety matters more than polish on a first campaign. AI ad tools make it cheap to try several angles: Addy makes 15-second ads from under $1 each on paid plans, and the first one is free.

What should you check after 7 days?

Look at each ad, not just the campaign total:

  1. Hook rate (3-second views divided by impressions). Low means the opening is not stopping people. Change the first 2 seconds. Benchmarks: hook rate benchmarks.
  2. Hold rate (ThruPlays or 15-second views divided by 3-second views). Shows whether the middle keeps attention. See hold rate.
  3. Link click-through rate. Good watch time with few clicks usually means a weak offer or call to action.
  4. Cost per result. The final judge once there is enough data.

Then pause clear losers, keep the best one or two running, and add 3 to 5 new variations of the winner with different hooks. Repeating that weekly is most of what good Reels advertisers do.

What mistakes should beginners avoid?

  • Boosting a post instead of using Ads Manager. Boosts have fewer controls and usually optimise for engagement, not sales.
  • Editing the ad set every day. Big changes restart learning. Give it a week.
  • Narrow interest stacks on small budgets. They raise costs.
  • Horizontal or square brand videos in a vertical placement.
  • Text in the bottom third, where the caption and buttons cover it.
  • Judging on likes. Likes do not pay; cost per result does.

Frequently asked questions

+How much should I spend on my first Instagram Reels ad?

A useful first test is $20 to $50 a day on one ad set for 7 days, so $140 to $350 in total. That is enough to compare 3 to 5 videos, not to prove long-term profit.

+Should I boost a Reel or use Ads Manager?

Use Ads Manager for sales or leads. Boosting is simpler but gives fewer options and usually optimises for engagement rather than purchases.

+How long should an Instagram Reels ad be?

Start with 15 to 20 seconds and put the hook in the first 2 seconds. Meta allows longer Reels ads, but short ads are easier to test.

+Can I run the same video on Reels and TikTok?

Yes, if it is 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 with text inside the safe zones and no TikTok watermark.
